Manche Masemola was best-known as one of the modern martyrs through accounts from missionaries, especially from Ga-Marishane in Sekhukhuneland, from which her life could be pieced together.
Matlebjane II gave birth to six sons: Mokwena, Seloane, Mogashoa, Phaahla Masemola and Photo. Each had his or her own mother and homestead as well as families that cared for them.

Masemola Clan Origin
Masemola was a Pedi woman living in Sekhukhuneland, northeast of Johannesburg. As an active Christian convert she endured severe persecution at the hands of those opposed to Christ.
Though she endured persecution and challenges to her faith in Jesus, she never let it waver. Following her death at the beginning of the 20th century, her story inspired a growing movement; she is buried at Mkhotsha Christian Cemetery in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Her family has an impressive legacy of activism and resistance, and their story holds great resonance for Pedi Christians who face severe persecution today.
Sepeke left Manganeng for Leswika la Makgopho near Jane Furse road in Ga-Marishane and established residence there, creating a huge rock used to count people during war or initiate schools; whenever it was needed they sent out a scout around its perimeters to learn of its presence.
At some point, Seloane, Mogashoa, Phaahla and Masemola realized they weren’t receiving enough gifts from King Matlebjane II and plotted to kill him secretly with spears during a night raid; Photo was unaware of this plan but would learn of it soon enough.
Masemola Clan Meaning
Clan names are given to individuals belonging to a single tribe, which make up AmaXhosa nation. Each tribe comprises four subtribes called the AmaNdlovu, AmaZulu, AmaHlobi and AmaBatau with one being Ga Masemola for individuals born of Ga Masemola family lineage.
Masemola’s name signifies courage and fearlessness, while it can also be taken as an insistence not to settle or compromise, reflecting his relentless flight from South Africa’s conquering rule and rejection of all false claims of an “open and democratic society”, including its very existence as an oppressive regime.
Jafta Kgalabi Masemola was born in Bon Accord outside Pretoria on 12 December 1931 and raised by his sister.
While in schooling he moved around Pretoria townships such as Marabastad and Atteridgeville completing standard six before attending Hofmeyr Secondary School to complete his Junior Certificate.
Following arrest he spent most of his adult life on Robben Island where he joined the African National Congress Youth League before finally being released upon Nelson Mandela’s request in 1989.
Masemola Clan Pronunciation
Masemola (pronounced M-ash-o-luh) is an increasingly common South African surname found across Southern Africa and beyond due to globalization. Additionally, other parts of the world also utilize this surname due to globalization trends.
Masemola clan’s name may have originated from one of several theories regarding its formation, one being that it may come from “mamo”, the Pedi word for father. Although this theory has been challenged, another explanation could be that its origin came from being one of a King’s nicknames.
Sepeke left Manganeng with his Madisa and followers and settled at a large rock known as Leswika La Makgopho (now Letlapeng Laga Marishane near Jane Furse road).
Here he used it as an important counting site during wars or initiation schools; counting people was critical if his plans did not encase enough individuals around it for each battle or school; according to legend he even sent out spies into Manganeng to determine whether or not their plan had worked or been abandoned by their leader!
Rampelane ultimately was chosen as leader of the Seloane clan; being the eldest among three, he was naturally considered as first choice. To defend their clan against all forms of attack, he organized an army from their initiation school called Mangana to protect it.
Masemola Clan Variations
Masemola, as its name implies, stands for courage and fearlessness – characteristics exemplified by their clan.
They do not shy away from challenging authority and this can be seen through their battle against the Mashabela family to overthrow Sepeke and Madisa’s authority over them. Their battle was successful and thus Nkadimeng clan emerged, which remains powerful today in this region.
Manche Masemola was a young Pedi woman living in South Africa’s Sekhukhuneland region at the turn of the twentieth century.
Unfortunately, her life was cut tragically short; becoming well known after her death in 1928 rather than through historical sources alone. Much is known about her thanks to Christian hagiographies rather than objective sources.
Her parents attempted to discourage her from attending baptismal classes, beating her several times as this took away from field work and possibly her dowry.
On or around 4 February 1928, this prediction came true – her body was discovered under a granite rock on a lonely hilltop near which her father planted several Euphorbia trees to commemorate her funeral procession.
Masemola and others established Poqo after being banned by the Unlawful Organizations Act in 1960, hoping to create an underground guerrilla structure under which to operate as part of their PAC organization. They planned a coup, however security police prevented this attempt at uprising from succeeding.
