Masoka Clan Origin

The Masoka clan names come from several houses, most prominently Mudzungwe. Their headman was known as mkunyane and responsible for administering all matters pertaining to their community, from marriages, divorces and legal matters through to protection. Customary practices required them to meet with other chiefs before taking decisions regarding such issues.

According to legend, the Mkunyane House originated due to an incident during Mtekwatekwa’s rule. After being reelected he decided to appoint his nephew Dirikwi as his successor.

Chitsunge was another important masoka house. Under its chieftaincy was Rambanapasi from Vanjanja tribe; other headmen included Gunguvo, Mabara and Mukanganise. Over time this village became part of what is known today as Madzimbo.

Yet due to a feud between this house and Madzvimbo who claimed that Neshangwe’s throne as their own they never managed to reach full Makumbe chieftainship status.

Mudzengi of the Masoka clan reigned from 1918-1962. His ancestor was Sahwenje/Sangwenje, son of the first Banga.

When reporting back to Rozvi on who should succeed him as Banga they refused. Subsequently he assumed the name Mushumba and became headman of Mashumba Clan which included Mudziwedare, Takawira, and Gumira clans.

Mtekwatekwa House ruled from Buhera until it fell to disarray during the mid 19th century when their followers moved outward due to an ancestor’s fight with another family member that resulted in his death and caused many followers to follow him into exile; hence their nickname of being known as an outcast group in Buhera.
