Mageba

Mageba is a clan name in Zulu culture. This term can also serve as a surname and refers to someone belonging to the Mageba tribe. It’s believed that this term stems from its creation by someone such as Chitho who led a war against Matshidi people while belonging to Mageba clan.

Mageba was Phunga’s twin brother and succeeded him as ruler of Zulu kingdom after Phunga died around 1727, evidenced in Zulu praise poetry such as: “Zulus are children of Phunga and Mageba!” This close brotherly succession between close brothers can be seen through such passages of praise poetry such as:

Mageba family was known to be very prosperous. They wore full buffalo hide blankets as blankets. After seeing this, other clans began calling them Mbatha and soon Sontshikazi’s homestead became known as Emambatheni and its name stuck.

Mageba had two sons, Ndaba and Mpangazitha. Mpangazitha married his cousin and from this union came the Mbatha clan and Mageza clans. The Mbathas are well known for their courageous military strategy which enabled them to defend their homeland from invaders while being proud and lively people, loving to dance and sing in their villages.
