History behind Mbeje clan names can be fascinating and reveal their roots. Clan and surnames play an integral part in African culture and identity – particularly Zulu culture and identity.
Children typically take their father’s clan and surname upon birth as an authentic African identity that helps establish them within their community and heritage; furthermore these connections exist through names themselves which offer deep personal, cultural, familial connections as part of these identities.
Sontshikazi Ka Mpangazitha Ka Mageba was an entertaining Sangoma and Storyteller who delighted his people with tales that combined humor and wonderment. His homestead was always full of people eagerly awaiting to listen to his stories.
Coupled with songs and drumming accompaniment, they would laugh all night long! Due to this tradition he became known as Mbatha and his homestead Emambatheni was even given that name!
The Mbatha people were known as prosperous and proud of their wealth, which earned them the name “Mathas”. These brave warriors would fight bravely in battles to protect their homeland and have an extremely strong sense of community which earned them another nickname of uThwala (pronounced ‘u-thw-wala”).
Furthermore, the Mbathas were very energetic people that loved dancing around in their villages.
A mbeje is a clan name composed of bound morphemes such as prefixes and suffixes that combine together to form words and their pronunciation. Together these bound morphemes create functional clan names with clear meaning that provide us with an idea of their purpose and significance.
Mbeje clan names are an integral part of Zulu language, helping understand what specific words mean. Mbeje names are especially prevalent in Mkhulu and Ntuntuni regions.
Mbeje clan names are formed using noun idla (corncord) and verb stem emini (eat midday). Idla is a noun form class 3 while emini is an adjective; these two forms of words combine through phonological means to produce clan names which mean to “eat at midday.”
These unique clan names help build deeper understanding of both language and its meaning – an aspect which makes mbeje names truly distinctive and important components of it – making learning them essential part of language studies!

Recently, the Mbatha clan held an event at their iNkosi Sizwe Mbatha’s homestead in eNkonjeni under the chairmanship and coordination of Senzo ‘Maswidi’ Mbatha and Stanley Bongokwakhe Dladla to bring all their clans under one kinship group while sharing, gathering, and celebrating their history.
Chairman of the Mbatha National Council iNkosi Mntonjani opened with an opening prayer and then spoke about its significance, stressing how unifying all Mbatha clans under one name will help reclaim their identity as one unified family.
He thanked iNkosi Sizwe Mbatha and his council for making this possible and Stanley Dladla followed with remarks of how happy he is that their roots have been found again.
The gathering was an enormous success, as everyone came together to share stories and gain more knowledge of Mbatha clans.
iNkosi Sizwe Mbatha delivered an address during this meeting and thanked members of Mbatha Kinship Group who attended as being such an integral part of Mbatha history; also thanking Mbatha National Council for all their hard work in planning this event.
At the gathering, Mbatha kinsmen shared a fascinating tale about how Sontshikazi got his name. According to this kinman, Sontshikazi’s name originated with Ntombbela people moving into Mbatheni for various reasons – such as showing their wealth or status.
These people would wear blankets made from tiger hide at night as well as necklaces crafted of pearls and brass beads; Sontshikazi was greatly impressed by these displays of wealth so he decided to adopt their style as his own way of dressing his entire life!
Sontshikazi’s name derives from this beautiful story of how people from various clans could come together peacefully, even though their origins differed greatly. We can take this lesson from it and apply it in our daily lives – learning respecting each other while appreciating differences will strengthen and unite families.
An excellent example being Mbatha Kinship Group where everyone works as one team – we are immensely proud of iNkosi Mntonjani and council! Keep up your amazing work; you deserve it all – good luck to all involved – God bless!
