Mamphela Aletta Ramphele, better known by her nickname of Maphela, was born December 28, 1947 in Northern Transvaal of South Africa to Rangoato Rahab and Pitsi Eliphaz, both school teachers. At the University of Natal, she met Biko and was exposed to Black activism both on campus and beyond. They soon became friends and lovers before graduating in 1972; shortly thereafter she opened the Zanempilo Health Clinic in King William’s Town; two months after giving birth she fell pregnant again, becoming pregnant with Lerato (her former lover’s child) who unfortunately died just two months after birth due to pneumonia.
Bhukula
Bhukula is an Eastern Cape South Africa clan of Mbumbo origin that dominates Lady Frere and surrounds. Their name derives from the river Bhukula that runs through town; their clan is led by amaGcina who have one member called uMadiba as their leader.
They are well known for their love of food and beverages, being very welcoming people with warm personalities who also tell great stories, taking great pleasure in laughing together with life while believing both good fortune as well as bad.
