The Tolo Clan is one of the oldest and largest clans in Southern Africa. Distinguished for their expertise as gunmen, its members played an essential role in supporting Cape Colony during its frontier wars.
Mavumengwana and Nkosi Mkhuli died during a war between AmaZizi and amaMpondo led by Nkosi Faku around 1822, when Xabadiya was still minor.

The origin of the name

The exact origins of the name tolo remain obscure; however, one possible theory suggests it may have come from an old Zulu word meaning elephant which was used by early Zulu people to refer to their enemies before becoming part of the clan name system in later generations.
There’s also the possibility that Tolo may be an abbreviation of “elephant.” This theory is supported by the Tolo family having strong associations with elephants.

Although small in numbers, the Mpondo have proven remarkably resilient people. Thanks to their fluid social structure and willingness to adjust during European expansion and subsequent upheavals.
Their communities were quick to build schools, newspapers, schools for their own language literature adaptation, new farming techniques as well as no fixed tribal hierarchy to hinder change or challenge traditional ideas.
The Mpondomise clan can trace its roots back to the Sibiside clan of Sibiside, Dlemini, and Njanya; their descendants include Santsabe, Sisiza, Ncindise, Cabe and Gangata clans.
Furthermore, Mpondomise is descended from twin brothers Mpondo and Mpondomise whose name means “twin.” Mpondomise begat Ngubonde who begot Ngcoya; these sons became Nkwanazi and Ngcoya respectively.
INkosi Mbande assumed rule of Mbashe after INkosi Masethi (Main House of Pokwana) left for Ngqutura in the 1880s. He was the great-grandson of Mlotsana who fathered Grababa and Dadeni.
And his great-grandson is INkosi Zwelidumile who currently governs Mbhashe as great-grandson of Mlotsana son of Mgqungelwa who fathered Ntsikelelo who fathers Ntomboxolo who later gave rise to Ntomboxolo’s ruling faction based in Mdantsane.
Also begotten Ntambo and Nomahesi from Ntsikelelo fathered by Mngqungelwa himself being born from Nomahesi daughter of Ngubane and later beheaded INkosi Mbande himself being fathered by Mngqungelwa who then beheaded INkosi Mbande.
Finally Ntomboxolo begat Ntomboxolo which in turn gave rise to Ntombana and Nomahesi families residing nearby Dutywa township; these families reside near Dutywa township; these families reside near Dutywa township.
The name is derived from the Hlubi language
There are various theories behind the origin of Tolo’s name. One suggests it comes from Hlubi language and means to serve. Another possibility suggests it was named thus because Tolo people put others before themselves by providing hospitality and generosity.
They valued wisdom and knowledge highly and had strong senses of community and family; believing in sharing resources equally among family members.
The Tolo people were known for their courage and strength. They willingly made great sacrifices in defense of their country and beliefs; this allowed them to endure through many difficult challenges posed by Britain invasions while building their own kingdom and fighting off invasion attempts by them.
